We were skeptical, but we now
highly recommend that all teachers own at least 1 pair of
HingeStix as a teaching tool." Steve Weiss Music on Twitter
The HingeStix® design simulates a loose grip and helps players
feel the rebound with less effort, making drumming easier.
HingeStix® practice drumsticks also helps drummers understand
and feel natural rebound, fulcrum, proper stick grip, finger
technique, and Moeller technique.
HingeStix® are a great teaching aide for students and
professionals. They have been recommended by Bernard Purdie, Joe
Morello, Hal Blaine, Richie Gajate-Garcia, Jonathan Haas, and Al
Payson.
“It’s important to get students to hold the drumsticks in a way
that promotes clean hand motion. Teachers and beginners should
check out this practice tool.” Chap Ostrander Modern Drummer Nov 2010
Sam's sticks are a
great tool in helping young drummers learn how to properly hold
the stick, as well as teaching proper rebound technique. Jason Bittner
I purchased two pairs
of Hinge Stix after first trying them out at Colin Woolways
studio. I have found them quite a revelation in teaching double
strokes. As an experienced player, you know as you increase your
speed you need to relax and be more fluid with your motions,
(this applies to racket sports as much as drumming). Its very
difficult to get younger students to understand this concept, as
the natural reaction is to tense up.
Several of my students have had great difficulty in playing
double strokes as they do not understand what they are trying to
achieve.
However with the
Hinge Stix, its more a case of trying to control the bounce
rather then how to create it. The added bonus is as you hold the
stick (match grip) parallel with the head and play, the hand,
wrist and forearms move together, creating a natural whipping
motion in preparation to learning the moeller technique.
Every teacher
should have them, even for experienced players they are great
fun.
